about the women's atheltic club of glendale

The Woman’s Athletic Club of Glendale (WAC) was founded in 1924 to encourage women to compete in sports, keep healthy and fit. Women could not freely engage in athletics and sports as they can today. Tennis, swimming, golf and hiking were original member interest groups known as departments.

By 1950’s WAC membership was up to 300 with many new departments formed and members actively participating in bowling, archery, ice skating, modeling, horseback riding, badminton, aqua gym and singing in addition to the original departments of tennis swimming, golf and hiking. In 1955, the organization purchased the current clubhouse at 600 S Verdugo Road, Glendale to have a central meeting location for its members.

Currently there are two active departments; hiking continues and quilting was added in 2014. Weekly hikes are organized covering the trails in the LA area. Quilters gather for in person sew days on Monday/Wednesday/Fridays in the WAC Clubhouse. Entire membership joins together for a yearly membership meeting in May and our annual Holiday Party in December. This year we are actively planning an event celebrating our 100th anniversary which will take place in August.

club pledge

I pledge myself to place good sportsmanship ahead of excellence in sport;

To be a good loser;

To be a considerate winner;

To be willing to help my fellow club members in thought, word, and deed;

To place the good of the club ahead of my personal gain.
